In Russia there are many national holidays. People all over the country do not work and special celebrations are held. The main public holidays are: New Year, March 8, May 1, Victory Day and Independence Day.

The first holiday of the year is the New Year. People celebrate the New Year at midnight on December 31st. They meet the new year with champagne and listen to the battle of the Kremlin chimes, counting 12 blows.
