I entered (enter) the dentist's waiting room which was (be)
full. Like any other waiting room, it had (have) an atmosphere of its own. A
small table was covered (be covered) with very old magazines; the curtains were (be) of
indefinite colour and the armchairs definitely unclean. There were (be) dusty
pictures on the wall. I took (take) my seat and decided (decide) to pass the time
watching the people around me.
A little man beside me was turning (turn) over
the pages of a magazine quickly and nervously. It was (be) hard to
understand what he was looking (look) at; from time to time he threw (throw) the magazine
on the table and picked up (pick up) another. Opposite me there was (be) a young
mother who was trying (try) hard to quiet her son. The boy was making (make) aeroplane-noises
as he was moving (move) an ashtray on the floor. Near him an old man was sleeping (sleep) and
the boy's mother was (be) afraid that sooner or later her son would wake (wake up) him up.
I myself was (be) sleepy. The boy was (be) quiet now in his mother's arms.
There was (be) a deathly silence in the room and just at this moment the
loud speaker called (call) out the name of the next lucky person.
