Russia is a fascinating country with a huge territory, natural resources, diverse climate, rich culture, and history. Russian history begins in the 9th century. Nowadays it is a powerful country with the developed industries and agriculture. At the same time, Russia is a very beautiful country with lots of lakes, rivers, hills, mountains and national parks.
The longest river in Europe is the Volga river which rises from the Valdai Hills and empties into the Caspian Sea. The world’s deepest, oldest and clearest lake is Lake Baikal — the Siberian miracle of nature. Its age is about 30 million years. Its water is so pure that on a good day you could see 40 meters into the lake.The Ural Mountains runs from north to south through Russia and separates Europe from Asia.
The capital of Russia is Moscow. More than 12 million people live and work in Moscow. There is another big city in Russia — Saint Petersburg. Sometimes it’s called the north capital or cultural capital. Saint Petersburg was founded by Peter the Great the first Emperor of Russia. It is fantastically beautiful city with lots of fountains and the famous White Nights. Russia has many ancient cities like Kostroma, Yaroslavl, Suzdal, Sergiev Posad and others. This is a group of cities also known as the Golden Ring. People like to visit them because there are lots of churches, monasteries and old wooden buildings.
Russia is a multinational country. Over 160 nationalities live in the country. They are Russian, Mordovian, Tatars, Bashkirian and others. The leader of the country is the President. Russia is one of the richest countries in raw materials and natural resources, including oil, gas, coal, timber, diamonds, gold and others. Because of its huge size, Russia’s climate varies dramatically. Whereas Siberia has bitterly cold winters with plenty of snow, the south areas like Sochi and Krasnodar have a sub-tropical hot climate with mild and wet winters.
