B.What is an apprenticeship? C.What options do I have after college? D.What options have I got after school? E.What is higher education? F.Where can I continue my education? G.Is it possible to move away to go to college? When you are thinking about making choices of your future career, it’s a good idea to talk to somebody who can help. The Special Education Needs Coordinator Robert Brightman answers some questions teenagers ask when they are about to finish school. 1.There are lots of things to think about when you leave school. To help you choose what to do next, you might need to think about: •what career you want to do in the future — some jobs need you to choose certain routes to get into them; •your predicted grades; •whether you want to carry on learning; •how you want to learn — some people enjoy school, and might like to continue; some people prefer doing things with their hands, so they might want to think about an apprenticeship; •maybe, you’d prefer to work. 2.There are lots of things to consider when you’re choosing where to study. It’s not just whether you choose college or university. You might want to think about the subjects that you want to study, and what faculty and kind of environment you want to learn in. You could visit a local college or university on an open day to see what it’s like. This must help you in your choice. 3.You can apply to study at any college of your choice. However, if you were to choose one away from home, you’d need to consider where you could live and how you could pay for your living costs. 4.An apprenticeship is a form of work-based learning. You’d usually spend three or four days a week working with an employer. You’d also go to college one or two days a week. In this time, you would work towards a qualification. You’d be paid a wage by your employer. Your training would also be paid for. Apprenticeships can be done in a wide range of areas and they usually last two or three years. 5.The length of an apprenticeship can vary. Usually, they can take between one and four years to finish. It depends on your skills and how quickly you learn. It also depends on the qualification that you are taking. 6.The length of an apprenticeship can vary. It also depends on the qualification that you are taking. 7.Higher education is the next level of study. Most higher education courses are taught at universities, but some colleges also offer higher education level courses, usually through having links with a university. Some specialist course providers also offer higher education courses, such as art schools and agricultural colleges. In order to get into some jobs, for example in teaching and medicine, a degree is essential. But if you’re not quite sure which job you’re aiming for yet, you could choose a subject simply because you are interested in it. A higher education qualification in any subject opens many doors, as many employers ask for this level of qualification regardless of subject. But higher education is about more than just study — there’s a big social side to it too. Many universities and colleges have a social group for almost any personal interest you might have, and opportunities for travel. Task 2.
