A long time ago on the Kazakh steppe, thegreat Bayterek tree grew.
This special treewas called the World Tree and it united theupper, middle and lower worlds.
Itsbranches reached into the heavens of theupper world, where two birds called outthe number of days remaining until theend of the world.
Its trunk belonged to themiddle, or human world, ruled by Maadai-Kara, and its roots went deep into theunderworld where the god, Erlik ruled.
Maadai-Kara had a glorious reign but as hegrew old, he lost his power.
One day, hefell asleep and his sleep lasted for sixtydays.
When he finally woke up, hisenemies were close.
He knew that whenthey approached even closer there wouldbe a terrible war.
Madaai-Kara had a babyson, Kögüdei Mergen.
To keep him safe, hedecided to take Kögüdei Mergen to theBlack Mountain and leave him there, where a poor woman of Altai found him.
Maadai-Kara returned to fight the battle, but he lost and the new ruler, Kara-Kula, made all of Maadai-Kara's people slaves.
On the Black Mountain, the poor womanof Altai took care of Kögüdei Mergen untilhe was ready to live his life on his own.
When he was old enough, Kögüdei Mergenleft the Black Mountain on his horse androde across the land.
He crossed apoisonous sea, made it through themoving mountains, and faced manymonsters on his way until he reached thehome of Kara-Kula and defeated him inbattle.
Kögüdei Mergen set all his people freefrom being slaves.
He became the newruler and with the help of seven kaans, hemarried the beautiful Altyn Küskü.
But still, his quest was not over.
He descended intothe underworld, to the land where thedead dwell.
There, he fought Erlik, the lordof the underworld and won.
Kögüdei Mergen released all the goodsouls from the underworld, leaving behindonly those who were guilty of committingterrible acts in life.
Kögüdei Mergen andhis wife, Altyn Küskü, ruled the land inpeace and harmony for many years, bringing about a new golden age in thehuman world.
When their lives came to anend, Kögüdei Mergen, Altyn Küskü and theseven great kaans became stars.
If youlook into the sky on a clear night, you canstill see them there, watching over theworld.
