The Maori are the ONLY people to live in New Zealand.
They CAME to New Zealand between 800 and 1300 AD.
During the _SECOND _World War, Maori soldiers were famous
as brave warriors, they WON many difficult battles.
Before Europeans came to New Zealand, the Maori did not need a name for THEMSELVES as a people.
After Europeans settled in New Zealand, the word Maori WAS USED
by the natives, which MEANT “normal” or “ordinary” in the
Maori language.
They called other people, especially THOSE who came from Britain, “Pakeha”.
