Baikal is located almost in the center of Asia within the 51°29'– 55°46' North latitude and 103°43'-109°58' East longitude. The length of the lake is 636 km, maximum width of 81 km, the coastline is about 2000 km and an Area of 31 500 km2. By area, Baikal occupies the 7th place among lakes after the Caspian sea, Victoria, Tanganyika, Huron, Michigan, and Upper. Baikal is the deepest lake in the world – 1637 m, average depth is 730 m.
The volume of water mass (23 000 km3) lake Baikal occupies the 1st place among the freshwater lakes in the world, with 20% of world and 80% of the inventory of waters of Russia. Water in lake Baikal more than all combined of the Great American lakes.
If we assume that the lake has stopped the flow of water through the tributaries, the river flows equal to the Hangar, began to flow out of Baikal 383 years, and filling the Cup of Baikal all the rivers of the globe would require more than six months (about 200 days). The level of the lake, following the regulation of its Irkutsk reservoir is maintained at 456-457 m above sea level. Flow into Baikal 336 rivers (according to I. D. Chersky) and follows one of the Hangar. The catchment area is 588 km2, of which 53% falls in the territory of Russia and 47% in Mongoli.
