The decision to transfer the capital to the banks of the Potomac was made in 1780 by the USA Congress. The capital was named Washington in honor of the first USA president. The White House is the residence of the President of the United States of America. The construction of the building was started in 1792. It was altered twice: in 1814 - after a fire, arranged by British soldiers, and after 1945. Unlike the residences of many heads of other states, the White House is open to the public. It is visited annually by more than one and a half million people from all over the world. Now there are 132 rooms in the building, which are located on different floors. The first and second floors are used for official purposes, the third floor is used by the president's family and his guests. The famous Oval Office is located in the west wing of the first floor. There is a table, which was presented by the British Queen Victoria and behind whom the president works. This residence is rather modest and at the same time impressive.
