Monument to Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol was opened for the 100th anniversary of the writer's birthday on April 26, 1909 on Prechistensky (now Gogol) boulevard. The monument to Gogol is made in granite and bronze. In 1951, the monument was removed from Gogol Boulevard, making room for a new monument. Until 1959, it was kept in a museum. In 1959, the year of the 150th anniversary of the birth of the writer, on the wave of Khrushchev's thaw, the monument was "returned from exile", setting near the house where Gogol lived for the past four years and where he died. The monument to Gogol was created by sculptor NAAndreev and architect F.O. Shekhtel. The pedestal of the monument to Gogol is decorated with bas-relief images of heroes of Gogol's works.
