10 Read the dialogue and write down the opportunities that Sue gives to I Consult the Linguistic and Cultural Guide in Appendix 4, page 198 for the words in bold. Which of the opportunities are more suitable for Russian students and which are not? Give your reasons. Sue: Hi, Carol. What are you up to after school today? Would you like to go for coffee? Carol: OK, Sue. That would be lovely. I need a friendly ear. Sue: Great. I'll see you in the coffee shop at half past three. (Later in the coffee shop Sue: What's up Carol? You look a bit confused. Is there something wrong with your coffee? Carol: Oh, no. the coffee is lovely... I am just thinking about what to do after my GCSEs. I don't know if I should I do my 'A' Levels? Sue: Have you thought about your options? You know like university? Or do you want to get a job that would train you? Carol: Oh, I don't know. I need to get high grades in my A Levels to go to a good university and I also don't think my family can afford the fees (iuiaiy . My parents really need me to contribute to the family income (доход . Sue: OK. Well, what I would do is go to a sixth form college and do your ver\ best in your A' Levels. Then your good results can get you to university when you are ready. Carol: Yes. I shouldn't waste my time at school just because I need to go to work. My results do matter. They will help me get a good job and. like you say, I can use them at a later date. Sue: Some companies even help you study. They may want you to do certain courses for your position so you can develop and get a promotion. Or they may be flexible so that you can study one day a week or do evening courses. Carol: Thanks Sue. You have given me some good ideas and have made me feel a bit more focused. Sue: That's OK, Carol. I mean, even if your job doesn't offer any training or opportunities for you to study and work, at least you will get good experience. Hopefully, you will be able to save up some money so that you could then go to university. Time off from education may make you think about what you really want to study. And if worst comes to worst and you really don't enjoy your work and want to get back to studying, you could always get a student loan that you pay back later. Carol: You know so much Sue. I knew it would be good to speak to you. You always keep an open mind and are always so positive. Sue: You're welcome! Phone me anytime you need a chat.
