Who invented jeans? Jeans were first made by a sail-maker, Oscar Levi-Strauss, in San Francisco in the 1850s. The word jeans may come from ‘jene fustien’, a strong cotton cloth, first made in Genoa, Italy. The original jeans were brown until denim was used. The word denim, in its turn, comes from the name of the French manufacturing town Nim. In French, de Nim means ‘from Nim’. However, jeans are believed to be a 100% American invention and Levi’s is still one of the most popular brands! Nowadays, people all over the world, men and women, rich and poor, wear jeans on all occasions: in classrooms and at parties, to theatres as well as to work.
