James Cook (1728-1779) - English explorer.
Born in Marton (Yorkshire) in the family wage worker. His father wanted his son to be a merchant, and gave to the disciples to the haberdasher. Thirteen-James showed character, left the owner and hired a cabin boy on coal ship "Free-Fishing." Sailed for several years, was promoted to skipper and enlisted in the Royal Navy. In the squadron of Admiral Saunders was involved in the ship "Mercury" in the siege of Quebec and Montreal.
In 1762-1767 he participated in hydrographic studies in North American rivers of Quebec, St. Lawrence, near the island of Newfoundland, Labrador.
